Giorgio M. Innocenti
GMI is a neuroanatomist and neurophysiologist who authored studies on the organization, development and plasticity of cerebral cortex and interhemispheric interactions in animals and humans. He is credited for the discovery of transient (exuberant) connections in the developing brain. More recently he has stimulated the interest of several laboratories on the diameter of central nervous system axons and associated properties. He has served as editorial board member or receiving editor of several neuroscience journals, as member of council of neuroscience societies and academies, and referee of research institutions. His work, supported by Swiss National Science Foundation, European community and Swedish Research Council, has produced 106 refereed articles, 57 invited papers and co-edition of 6 books or special issues. GMI’s current interest focusses on the comparison of histological data on brain connectivity with those obtained from MR derived methodologies.
